Jumonville and Crosses

Approaching what was once a familiar hillside, I am dumbfounded to see it has been sliced off at the top. A commercial development is perched on its top. I think it is a car dealer. It is the now classic sliced off mountain top you see thoughout coal country.

What strikes me is the plethora of light fixtures that look like St. Stephen’s cross. You see, he did not want to have the same kind of cross as Jesus did because he did not feel worthy.

But this huge field of bright white silhouettes stands silently as reminders, to me, of the many citizens who were slain in the name of progress. The creatures whose homes were destroyed for the sake of shale gas. I am saddened by this scene.

On the top of the distant ridge I see the cross at Jumonville. Jumonville Cross

Is this sarcasm? Poignant? It is surely uncanny. Is this poor planning? Is this someone’s demonic sense of humor? Is this Justice with the image reflecting Jesus and his suffering overseeing the suffering of today?

The juxtaposition of the cross of Jesus overlooking what looks like the Roman Way of crucifixion and suffering is disturbing. The suffering is different today and more widespread. AND fewer people see it.

I know I will never see that hilltop in the same way again.
